Misuse of the Comma - Lesson 008

#Pause4English

Lesson 008

Topic: Misuse of the Comma.

The "Comma" is one of the misused Punctuation marks in English.

Here are some ways most people misuse "The Comma".

1. Separating a simple subject from its verb by a  comma.
E.g.
1. My father and cousin, were going to the hospital.
2. Esi and Yaaya, got to the site very late.

The above Error is very difficult to understand grammatically. It is unjustified in the use of groupings or parenthesis.

2. Misuse a Comma in certain cases with a participle.
E.g.
1. My guest, having gone home, I went to bed.
2. Miss Elsie, being a little deaf, the speaker raised his voice.

The above sentences are logically wrong. The two sentences are Cause - and - Effect grouping, the grouping being decided by the "comma".
The subject in the first sentence is "I" and the subject of the second sentence is "the Speaker".
The other parts of the sentences, the groups dependent on the participles "having" and "being" are subordinate.
So the new sentences may be:
1. My guest having gone home, I went to bed.
2. Mr. Brown being a little deaf, the speaker raised his voice.

LITERARY DEVICE OF THE DAY

Today's Device is "Personification"

Personification is a figure of speech that gives human traits or characteristics to non - human or non - living things.

E.g.

1. My motorbike groaned, coughed and the crawled to a halt.
2. Death lays his icy hands on both old and youth, even kings are not spared.
