How to teach vocabulary and extend conceptual learning among children?
There are various methods to teach Vocabulary to children.
Here are just few.
👉Using the Combine Strategy.
In this method, the teacher combines Look & Say and Phonics to teach vocabulary.
In this method, the teacher first shows the picture of the word to the learners using charts, walk paper or flash cards.
Teacher then teach the various sounds of the letters in the the "New Word". Teachers explains to children that there is great difference between letters of the Alphabets and the Sounds they make.
👉Using Vocabulary in Context.
After successfully teaching children the vocabulary, teacher then show children vocabulary in context (Word in Action). In this strategy, the teacher uses the word in different forms and situations. This helps children to understand the meaning of words properly.
👉The Use of Children L1
Children learn words or vocabulary better if they can relate it to their native language (L1). So any new vocabulary should be related to the child's L1, because it will make it easier for understanding.
👉Use of Games
To consolidate learning and understanding of the new vocabulary, children can play Language Games in class. Examples include Dominoes, "Can We Go", "Market buying", etc.
