Lesson 004

Topic: "a", "an" and "some"

Revision:
Countable (Unit) Nouns are nouns which can be counted. E.g. book, pen, chalk, etc.
Uncountable  (Mass) Nouns are nouns which cannot be counted. E.g. water, sugar, etc.
Also, some Nouns are Countable or Uncountable depending on context.

In today's lesson, we shall discuss the "a", "an" and "some".

"a" or "an" is used for any one example of a Countable Noun.
Also, "a" and "an" are called "Indefinite Article.

"a" is used before a word beginning with a consonant, or a vowel sounding like a consonant: e.g. a boy, a man, a chair, a University etc.

The "an" is used before words beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) or words beginning with a silent 'h'. E.g. an orange, an egg, an honest man, an honourable woman, etc.

The plural of "a" and "an" is "some".
"Some" means 's unknown number of' the things named by the noun.
E.g.
There some books on the shelves last night.

Also, Uncountable Nouns  and Countable Nouns in the Plural are preceded by "some" when 'a certain quantity, or number' is implied.
Example.
Give me some bread.

WORD POWER
"Introvert, Extrovert, and Ambivert" are built on the  Latin Verb, to turn. If your thoughts are constantly turned inward (intro -), you are Introvert; when your thoughts are constantly turned outward (extro-), an Extrovert; and when your thoughts are constantly turned in both directions (ambi-), you are an Ambivert.
