Topic: Subject Verb Agreement 


Which is right?


1. Each of the boys is working hard.

2. Each of the boys are working hard.


But, before we answer, let us observe the following: 


1. Each of them .

2. One of them.

3. None o them.

4. Not one of them.


a, b, c and d are all singular subjects and therefore has to move with singular verbs. 


Example,


1. Each of us has a duty to perform.

2. One of the managers lives near the hostel.


However, the following are usually plural subjects.


1. Many of them. 

2. All of them.

3. Few of them.

4. Several of them.


Example, 


1. Several of the tourists have arrived.

2. Few of the boys ever tell the truth. 



So to answer the question, 


1. Each of the boys is working hard.

2. Each of the boys are working hard.


The correct answer should be 


1. Each of the boys is working hard.
